SUICIDAL IDEATION THERAPY FAQs

If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts about suicide, you may have a lot of questions about getting help. Convenient Colorado Counseling is here to answer your questions. I understand that this can be a difficult and sensitive topic, which is why I compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you understand more about suicidal ideation and my approach to treatment. I am here to be a mental health resource for you and are committed to providing the care and compassion you deserve.

Suicide ideation is defined as persistent thoughts about suicide or making plans to attempt suicide. It’s important to understand that suicide ideation is not the same as suicidal intent — someone who is experiencing suicidal ideation may not actually attempt suicide. However, it’s still a serious condition that requires professional treatment.

There are many factors that can contribute to the development of suicidal thoughts. Some of the most common include depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trauma, and chronic pain. Other risk factors include a family history of mental illness, previous suicide attempts, and access to firearms. Remember that anyone can experience suicidal thoughts, and there is no one “type” of person who is at risk.

Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Talking about wanting to die or hurt oneself
  • Expressing feelings of hopelessness
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Increasing alcohol or drug use
  • Withdrawing from friends and activities
  • Giving away possessions
  • Impulsive or reckless behavior

If you notice any of these changes in yourself or someone you love, it’s important to seek professional help.

There are many effective treatments available for people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts. Depending on the individual’s needs, treatment may include medication, therapy, or a combination of these methods. The most important thing is to get started on treatment as soon as possible. With proper care, it is possible to reduce or even eliminate suicidal thoughts altogether.

Calling 988 will connect you with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. You will be connected with a compassionate crisis worker who will listen to you, understand you, and provide support. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is free, confidential, and available 24/7.

I am unable to prescribe you medication. However, I can connect you to a medication-prescribing clinician who will work with your medication needs.

The goal of suicide ideation therapy is to support you. I am here to listen to you, make you feel heard, and work with you to create a plan that will help move you forward to the life you want for yourself. You are safe to face your emotions and vulnerabilities here at Convenient Colorado Counseling. Healing is possible, and it can start with suicidal ideation therapy.

Suicide ideation therapy can be very helpful in treating thoughts of suicide. Therapy can provide you with tools to cope with suicidal thoughts, and it can help you to explore the underlying causes of those thoughts.

At Convenient Colorado Counseling, I offer online therapy sessions for people struggling with suicide ideation. Online counseling allows you to receive the care you need in the security of your own home. My goal is to provide you with non-judgmental mental health services to help you heal and live a happier life.

Therapy is different for everyone, but in general, it involves meeting with your therapist on a regular basis to discuss your thoughts and feelings. While working together, we will use a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches to support you.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. I will work with you to come up with a plan that supports you and allows you to make the changes in your life that you want. Some of the types of therapies that may be used during our sessions include:

  • Adapted dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)
  • Person-centered therapy
  • Strength-based therapy
  • Solution-focused brief therapy
  • Trauma-informed therapy
  • Existential therapy
  • Gestalt therapy
  • Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS)

The length of therapy depends on many factors, including the severity of your symptoms and your response to treatment. In some cases, therapy may only last a few weeks or months. In other cases, it may last for several years. The amount of time we will work together will also depend on your personal goals and your healing journey. There is no wrong or right amount of time it takes.

My goal is to create affordable and accessible counseling services for individuals in Colorado. I accept most major insurance, including United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, TriWest, and all Medicaid RAEs. You may also be able to be reimbursed for counseling services if you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Plan (HSA).

Yes — your therapy records are protected by HIPAA.
